I'm a 42yo online communications & IT consultant, and ex recording artist, from Melbourne, Australia.

After much searching, I finally met the right man. Then I got pregnant at 41 - baby boy was due 20 April 2010.

It was to be quite a journey. We discovered via ultrasound that our baby had some health problems, namely a hole in the heart, hypospadias and IUG growth issues.

Then I became very ill with pre-eclampsia, and was admitted to hospital at 34 weeks gestation.

Our baby Charles was delivered prematurely on 16th March 2010 weighing a tiny 1460g (3.5 pounds). He spent a month in hospital before coming home.

"Heartening" news...

We have had some "heartening" news. Baby has been scanned again by the cardiologist, and, whilst he still has a clear hole in his heart, the situation does not seem as bad as first feared.

There are no secondary problems with the arteries etc, the cardiologist does not believe he has the dreaded Tetralogy of Fallot, and believes it is even possible his hole may close or heal on its own. Some minor narrowing of the left valve, but not severe enough to warrant further concern.

Baby may still need surgery, so he will require careful monitoring, with some days in the NICU once he is born. But all going well he should be able to come home with us, and then will simply require regular monitoring by a cardiologist as he grows.

We both felt much lighter yesterday :-)

All the best with your little one. Just wanted to let you know our 4-year-old had open heart surgery last year and recovered beautifully. (He had a congenital heart defect that wasn't picked up until he was almost 4.) I know it's different with a tiny baby, but even so, try to take comfort from the fact there is so much that can be done with little hearts these days.

So glad you got good news! If you do need any extra support, contact HeartKids in Victoria. We're members of HeartKids QLD and they provided us with lots of information and support.
